In March 2005 the States of Guernsey passed a Requête committing the Bailiwick to supporting Fairtrade. Over 100 local businesses signed up, leading to Fairtrade Island Status in March 2006.

The Fairtrade Guernsey Steering Group is a small group of volunteers representing a cross-section of island life, from education, churches and other community organisations to retail, wholesale and hospitality. Fairtrade Guernsey has campaigned since 2005 for the rights of farmers and workers in lower income countries. Guernsey achieved Fairtrade Island Status in March 2006, following a States of Guernsey Requête in March 2005 that committed the Bailiwick's government to supporting Fairtrade. —
