Story

Built by Nicolas Maingy as 'Le Mont' at the corner of Mont Durant and Petite Marche. First inhabited by Lt Gov Major General John Small (1793-96). Once owned by privateer Jean Allaire. Became Government House permanently in 1925 when purchased by the Crown. Ownership transferred to the States of Guernsey in 1948. Requisitioned by the Third Reich during WWII as residence of the German Kommandant of Guernsey. (inferred from the source page)

Government House is the official residence of the Lieutenant-Governor and his partner. It is used to host guests from all over the world and to stage events and ceremonies in support of the Bailiwick and its community. The Lieutenant-Governor is appointed by The Monarch as the Crown's personal representative in the Bailiwick for a five year term. The grounds of Government House comprise around 10 acres of parkland and landscaped gardens with over 150 mature trees. —
